Shenzhen is one of the four first-tier cities in China, the provincial city of Guangdong Province, the regional center city and the mega city. Shenzhen is located in the south of Guangdong, on the east bank of the Pearl River Estuary, separated from Hong Kong by water, and bordered by Dongguan and Huizhou in the north.
The city has jurisdiction over 9 administrative districts and 1 new district with a total area of 1997.47 square kilometers. As of the end of 2017, the resident population of Shenzhen was 12.528 million, of which the registered population was 4,472,200, the actual administrative population was over 20 million, and the urbanization rate was 100%.
Shenzhen's “National Center City Index” ranks fourth in China and is ranked as the world's first-tier city by GaWC. In December 2018, it was ranked as the top 30 cities with the strongest innovation and the 5th best tourist destination city in China.
