Lijiang River, which belongs to the Xijiang River system in the Pearl River Basin, is a generic term for the tributary of the upper reaches of the Guijiang River and is located in the northeastern part of the Guangxi Zhuang Autonomous Region. The length of the Minjiang section is 164 kilometers. Most of the riverbeds along the river are watery pebbles with small amount of sediment and clear water. Most of the straits are karst landforms. The tourism resources are abundant, and the famous Guilin landscape is on the Lijiang River.
The scenery of the Lijiang River is known as Shanqing, Shuixiu, Dongqi and Shimei. The 83-kilometer Lujiang River section from Guilin to Yangshuo is the essence of the Minjiang River, as well as the “Shentan, Shoal, Flowing Spring, and Flying Waterfalls”. It is a typical, rich and concentrated area of karst topography, which concentrates the essence of Guilin’s landscape. It is a feeling of "the boat travels on the blue waves, and the people swim in the middle of the painting."
In November 1982, “Guilin Lijiang Scenic Area” was listed as the first batch of national key scenic spots by the State Council, requiring key protection. In December 1991, Minjiang Scenic Area ranked second in the list of “Top 40 Chinese Tourist Destinations” announced by the National Tourism Administration. In November 1996, Lijiang was listed as one of the 13 rivers protected by the state.
